Facebook And The Bible

Facebook is a social-network website that enable many people to connect to millions of people around the globe. With just an internet connection everyone can meet many new friends, get connected to old friends and acquintances, share their feelings, comment on others post, search people with the same hobby / college / place, play games, etc. Facebook became so popular by it's many uses and many feature it provide.

While facebook serve many purpose, it depends on us what we use facebook for. Every things is like a two side of a coin, it can have a positive effect and negative effect, we could use it for a good purpose or an evil one. So what are those positive and negative side of facebook according to the Holy Bible?

Positive Aspect of Facebook

Matthew 28 : 18 – 20
“Then Jesus came up and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore, as you go, disciple all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey all that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you each and every day until the end of the age."

Jesus commanded us to tell all the nations about HIM and teaching them to obey HIS word. Our love to Jesus urge us to tell others all we know about HIM and HIS love, while we can use the traditional method to do this, facebook seems to be a great way for us to share HIS love to many people around the world. We could post our thought about Jesus in facebook and let other to comment about it and if they are interested we can tell more about Jesus to them. If we see someone post about his/her problem, we could give advice according to what the Holy Bible say. People love positive encouragement, and if it comes from the Holy Bible, they will have interest in studying it further.

Hebrews 3 : 13
“Instead, continue to encourage one another every day, as long as it is called "Today," so that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.”

Everyday we struggle to defends ourself from the evil and sin, for satan always wait for the opportunity to devour us (1 peter 5 : 8). By encouraging one another, we will be united together to fight satan. Facebook alow us to see others feeling trough what they share in it, therefore we can use it to encourage those in need. We can’t always be around someone for 24/7 physically, but facebook makes it possible to stay connected 24/7 to see what our friends feels at any moment and if for example someone feels desperate and try to commit suicide we will know it first hand and develop a way to help him/her.

Negative Aspect of Facebook

Matthew 10 : 37
"The one who loves his father or mother more than me isn't worthy of me, and the one who loves a son or daughter more than me isn't worthy of me.”

To be a real disciple of Jesus Christ, to be a real Christian, we must love our GOD above anything else, even more than love for family and close friends. Facebook can easily consume our time and attention for it’s many feature (games, apps, etc) it could be even more popular to us than GOD. People could love facebook more than GOD. Can we spend hours to hear GOD’s word through the Holy Bible? We sure can spend hours using facebook. Do we have time to pray to GOD and worship HIM? We sure always have the time to access facebook.

Act 2 : 46
“They had a single purpose and went to the temple every day. They ate at each other's homes and shared their food with glad and humble hearts.”

Hebrews 10 : 25
“not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another even more as you see the day coming nearer.”

Become the disciple of Jesus is the way of life, not just knowledge or theory about Jesus. Jesus teach us to be united together in community with one standard : the Holy Bible. We are encouraged to meet and spent time being together physicaly either in each other’s home or in a church or anywhere else. Facebook can replace this real meeting with a virtual one. Many had more comfort share in facebook than to meet directly in person. This virtual relationship draw away the emotion involved when we meet in person, how can we love each other when there is no emotion involved? The love we had would have been fake, unreal.

Conclusion

As with other technology in our life, they where invented in a positive way of thinking, never had the inventor had the intention to make it destructive to our live. But the outcome of all thecnology depends on who use it and for what, even the Holy Bible can be bad if used in negative way.

Facebook can make our live better or worst, it depends on how we use it and for what purpose. It could be a tool to preach the gospel to all nations, or it could steal our love toward GOD. It could connect us with friends and family, or it could make us away from them by too much playing it’s games and apps. Either way, be wise using facebook for GOD could use it and so does the devil.
